How much to charge for wedding photography in India

Pricing is the question every photographer argues about and almost nobody structures. Charge too little and a packed season still leaves nothing after costs; quote too high without the positioning to back it and enquiries ghost. The way out is not a magic number — it's a framework: know your floor, pick your band, price per function, and raise deliberately.

The bands below are indicative of the Indian market as of 2026 and vary hugely by city and reputation. Use them to locate yourself, not as a rate card.

Step 1 — Know your cost floor

Add up what one wedding actually costs you: crew day-rates (in-house salaries divided by realistic shoot days, freelancers at market rate), editing hours, album and print costs, travel, equipment depreciation and a share of your fixed costs (office, software, insurance, marketing). Most studios that 'feel busy but broke' discover their real cost per wedding is 50–70% of what they charge — before paying themselves.

Step 2 — Locate your market band

The Indian wedding photography market roughly stratifies into four bands for full multi-day coverage (photo + video):

  • Budget/entry: ~₹50,000–1,50,000 — small crews, essential coverage, digital delivery
  • Mid-market: ~₹1,50,000–4,00,000 — the volume band in most metros; full crews, albums, cinematic film
  • Premium: ~₹4,00,000–10,00,000 — established brands, candid + cinematic teams, strong post-production
  • Luxury/destination: ₹10,00,000+ — name-brand studios, destination weddings, editorial-grade work

Step 3 — Price per function, sell the package

Internally, know your per-function economics: what a Mehandi evening costs and earns versus a full wedding day. Externally, quote the package with functions itemised. This lets families adjust scope instead of hammering your rate, and makes multi-function weddings visibly better value per event — which is how you sell the whole wedding instead of just the wedding day.

Step 4 — Raise prices like a business

  • Raise season by season (10–20%), not mid-negotiation
  • Let your portfolio justify the band above before you price into it
  • When demand exceeds your calendar, prices are too low — the calendar is the signal
  • Never discount silently: trade scope ('we can do that price without the pre-wedding shoot')
  • Track conversion rate by price band; below ~20% enquiry-to-booking usually means positioning, not price

The numbers you can't manage without

None of this framework works if you don't know your enquiry count, conversion rate, average booking value and cost per wedding. That's not a spreadsheet hobby — it's the difference between pricing and guessing. A studio management system that tracks enquiries through quotes to bookings gives you these numbers as a by-product of working.

Frequently asked questions

What do most wedding photographers charge per day in India?

Solo photographer day rates commonly run ₹15,000–50,000 depending on city and experience; full-crew wedding-day coverage in the mid-market band typically lands between ₹75,000 and ₹2,00,000. Treat these as orientation, not a rate card.

Should I publish my prices?

Publishing starting prices ('wedding coverage from ₹1,50,000') filters unqualified enquiries and anchors negotiations, at the cost of some volume. Most mid-market and premium studios publish a starting point and quote specifics per wedding.

How do I stop clients from negotiating so hard?

Itemise. A lump sum invites a lump discount; an itemised quote turns negotiation into scope adjustment. Confidence in a printed, numbered quotation also negotiates better than a number typed into WhatsApp.
